Overview

With Cambodia’s growing prosperity, automobile ownership is rapidly increasing. While the vast majority of cars in Cambodia are imported second-hand vehicles, new cars are gaining in popularity with the country’s increasing disposable income levels. Cambodia’s new car market share has increased significantly from around 19 percent in 2018 to 51 percent in 2024, reflecting an growing middle-income class with appetite for safer products and lower maintenance costs. The most popular models are four-wheel-drive vehicles, SUV, pick-up truck and mid-sized sedans. All car imports must be left-hand drive. The United States is the largest supplier of used vehicles in Cambodia.

A number of companies sell used and new cars in Phnom Penh, including Ford and Chevrolet. U.S.-branded vehicles are popular and highly recognized for quality and durability. To meet increasing demand, Ford’s local distributor, RMA Group Cambodia, opened an auto assembly plant in Pursat province in June 2022 that was expanded in April 2025. Mercedes, Ssangyong, Great Wall Motor, Hyundai, BMW, Peugeot, Honda, Nissan, Subaru, Mitsubishi, and Mazda have local dealerships in Cambodia. Cambodia has committed to boost the use of electric vehicles (EV) cars and buses by 40 percent, and EV motorcycles by 70 percent by 2050. The EV market has remarkably increased to around 2,200 units in 2024 from only around 330 in 2023 and 50 units in 2021, driven mainly by the adoption of EV motorbikes. The market is at a nascent stage which contributes to only around eight percent of the new auto market. While EV cars are gaining popularity, users are still confronted with the challenge of an insufficient charging station network.

Automobile parts and accessories from the United States are available in Cambodian markets, particularly for Ford and General Motors vehicles. Toyota remains a top brand choice for consumers because parts are readily available and affordable. As with other products, U.S. auto parts have a reputation for quality and attract a higher price than parts produced in Thailand, Taiwan, or other locations in Asia.

Cambodia’s auto assembly plants increased rapidly from seven in June 2024 to 10 plants in 2025. Chinese EV manufacturer BYD recently invested in a $32-million electric vehicle assembly plant in Sihanoukville. Besides Ford, other auto assembly plants in Cambodia include Hyundai Camko Motor, Daehan Auto, HGB Motors assembly, EM Automotive, K Cambodia, GTV Motor, Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing, and ZO Motor Truck.

Global Business Navigator Chatbot Beta

Welcome to the Global Business Navigator, an artificial intelligence (AI) Chatbot from the International Trade Administration (ITA). This tool, currently in beta version testing, is designed to provide general information on the exporting process and the resources available to assist new and experienced U.S. exporters. The Chatbot, developed using Microsoft’s Azure AI services, is trained on ITA’s export-related content and aims to quickly get users the information they need. The Chatbot is intended to make the benefits of exporting more accessible by understanding non-expert language, idiomatic expressions, and foreign languages.

Limitations

As a beta product, the Chatbot is currently being tested and its responses may occasionally produce inaccurate or incomplete information. The Chatbot is trained to decline out of scope or inappropriate requests. The Chatbot’s knowledge is limited to the public information on the Export Solutions web pages of Trade.gov, which covers a wide range of topics on exporting. While it cannot provide responses specific to a company’s product or a specific foreign market, its reference pages will guide you to other relevant government resources and market research. Always double-check the Chatbot’s responses using the provided references or by visiting the Export Solutions web pages on Trade.gov. Do not use its responses as legal or professional advice. Inaccurate advice from the Chatbot would not be a defense to violating any export rules or regulations.

Privacy

The Chatbot does not collect information about users and does not use the contents of users’ chat history to learn new information. All feedback is anonymous. Please do not enter personally identifiable information (PII), sensitive, or proprietary information into the Chatbot. Your conversations will not be connected to other interactions or accounts with ITA. Conversations with the Chatbot may be reviewed to help ITA improve the tool and address harmful, illegal, or otherwise inappropriate questions.

Translation

The Chatbot supports a wide range of languages. Because the Chatbot is trained in English and responses are translated, you should verify the translation. For example, the Chatbot may have difficulty with acronyms, abbreviations, and nuances in a language other than English.
