Overview

Cambodia’s tourism sector contributed about 9.4 percent to GDP in 2024, generating around $3.6 billion revenue. International arrivals totaled over 6.7 million in 2024, up 23 percent from 2023, and 1.4 percent more than the pre-pandemic level in 2019. The global economic slowdown and geopolitical tensions have lead to lower-spending tourists compared to the pre-pandemic level when the sector represented 12 percent of GDP and generated $5 billion in 2019. Most tourists are attracted to the historical/cultural complex of Angkor Wat. Eco-tourism promotion, investment from local businesses, including private and common island development, and tourism attractions in mountain areas across the country are leading trends.

More international brands have entered the market, including well-known U.S. hospitality companies such as Hyatt and Marriott. Other U.S. ties to Cambodian tourism industry include the Angkor Wildlife & Aquarium and the Shinta Mani Wild luxury eco-tourism resorts.

Leading Sub-sectors

Cambodia officially opened the new Techo International Airport (KTI) outside Phnom Penh on September 9, 2025, the Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) in October 2023, and the currently domestic-only Dara Sakor Airport in Koh Kong province in April 2025 with the aim to attract more international tourists.

The airport in the southern coastal town of Sihanoukville was expanded and upgraded in 2020 to accommodate larger aircraft, primarily from China, and the government has approved a number of resort development projects by international and Cambodian developers on the country’s islands, southern coastline, and mountain areas. The government is also looking to open more of the country to eco-tourism, capitalizing on natural resources such as mountains, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, and rare animal species like the Mekong dolphin.

Opportunities

Cambodia’s tourism developments present market opportunities for U.S. companies to develop resort or tourist attractions and supply tourism-related products or infrastructure as the sector continues to recover from the pandemic. Tour operators and travel agencies have significant opportunities to work with the Cambodian Tourism Board to bring tours to Cambodia and vice versa.

Global Business Navigator Chatbot Beta

Welcome to the Global Business Navigator, an artificial intelligence (AI) Chatbot from the International Trade Administration (ITA). This tool, currently in beta version testing, is designed to provide general information on the exporting process and the resources available to assist new and experienced U.S. exporters. The Chatbot, developed using Microsoft’s Azure AI services, is trained on ITA’s export-related content and aims to quickly get users the information they need. The Chatbot is intended to make the benefits of exporting more accessible by understanding non-expert language, idiomatic expressions, and foreign languages.

Limitations

As a beta product, the Chatbot is currently being tested and its responses may occasionally produce inaccurate or incomplete information. The Chatbot is trained to decline out of scope or inappropriate requests. The Chatbot’s knowledge is limited to the public information on the Export Solutions web pages of Trade.gov, which covers a wide range of topics on exporting. While it cannot provide responses specific to a company’s product or a specific foreign market, its reference pages will guide you to other relevant government resources and market research. Always double-check the Chatbot’s responses using the provided references or by visiting the Export Solutions web pages on Trade.gov. Do not use its responses as legal or professional advice. Inaccurate advice from the Chatbot would not be a defense to violating any export rules or regulations.

Privacy

The Chatbot does not collect information about users and does not use the contents of users’ chat history to learn new information. All feedback is anonymous. Please do not enter personally identifiable information (PII), sensitive, or proprietary information into the Chatbot. Your conversations will not be connected to other interactions or accounts with ITA. Conversations with the Chatbot may be reviewed to help ITA improve the tool and address harmful, illegal, or otherwise inappropriate questions.

Translation

The Chatbot supports a wide range of languages. Because the Chatbot is trained in English and responses are translated, you should verify the translation. For example, the Chatbot may have difficulty with acronyms, abbreviations, and nuances in a language other than English.
