Greece Infrastructure Top Ministry Spending Priorities

In June 2023, Greece’s New Democracy party won a second four-year term. In July, the newly appointed Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras presented his top priorities to the Greek parliament, highlighting how infrastructure and transportation will play a major role as drivers of the Greek economy in the coming years. The priority areas that the Greek government will focus on during this term include:

Priorities include:
1.    Fulfillment of critical infrastructure projects to increase Greece’s interconnection
2.    Bus fleet renewal
3.    Railway network reconstruction
4.    Update of air traffic control system and reorganization of Greek Civil Aviation
5.    Road Safety prioritization
6.    Promotion of sustainable transportation using gas, electricity and hydrogen
7.    Irrigation network investment
8.    Contactless payments in mass transport
9.    Digitization projects
10.    Strategic Plan for application of Modeling Technology in Greece

Funding from these public sector projects will come from various sources from both the European Union and Greek government. Some of these projects have received funding from the Enterprise Agreement for the Development Framework (NSRF) 2014-2020 and NSRF 2021-2027, which will provide 21 billion euro. The projects under the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience funds (RRF) are all at a mature stage and moving forward. At the same time, the Public Investments Program (PDE) is also being utilized for various projects.

The Ministry has announced over 15 new projects for 2024 valued at 3 billion euro, which will bring the total value of projects under construction to 20 billion euro. These amounts do not include private construction projects, which has been growing significantly for the past ten years.

Greece’s increased spending on infrastructure holds great potential for U.S. firms in the areas of design and construction, “smart technologies,” consulting services, industrial machinery, transportation infrastructure, and more.  To learn more about If interested in learning more about U.S. opportunities in these projects, please contact Irini Karajani at the U.S. Commercial Service in Greece via Irini.karajani@trade.gov
