Today, the U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, Marisa Lago, and the Salvadoran Minister of Economy, Maria Luisa Hayem, issued the following statement on their governments’ shared commitment to deepening cooperation on digital policy issues:

“The United States and El Salvador seek to collaborate to realize El Salvador’s aspirations to become a regional technology hub through pursuing a sound digital regulatory environment and improving the overall business climate.

We look forward to working together to share investment promotion best practices on facilitating job-creating inbound business investment in El Salvador.

During the Digital Policy Workshop held on November 9, 2023, we identified means of enhancing our bilateral cybersecurity cooperation. The United States and El Salvador explored ways to share best practices and approaches such as the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and promote cybersecurity opportunities to help private sector and government organizations secure critical networks and data.

The challenges facing cross-border data flows are increasingly global and require solutions that work across multiple jurisdictions. We are committed to open and inclusive engagement to support trusted global data flows that are critically important for cross-border commerce and our economies. All of these efforts will help to foster a business enabling environment, which is a shared objective as well as a core strategy to address economic insecurity and inequality under the Biden-Harris Administration’s Root Causes Strategy.

The United States and El Salvador will work together to ensure the security and resilience of our telecommunications networks, including by building a diverse supply chain and influencing the development of future telecommunications technologies such as 6G. We affirm the role of governments in promoting these more diverse, competitive, and resilient telecommunications market ecosystems. Today, we affirm our commitment to collaborate in creating open and interoperable networks and fostering public-private dialogue.

We look forward to continuing to build on our partnership to promote inclusive economic growth.”
