Togo requires imported products to carry clear labeling and traceable markings. Since 2024, many goods must use the Automated Marking System (SAM) to improve product tracking and combat tax evasion.
For consumer goods, labels must:
- Be written in French.
- Include safety warnings and instructions for use.
- Provide manufacturer information.
- Show batch numbers and expiration dates, when applicable (where applicable).
Tobacco products face the strictest rules, including:
- A near-total ban on advertising and promotion.
- Health warnings covering 65% of packaging.
- Prohibitions on misleading descriptors such as “light” or “mild”.
Non-biodegradable plastic bags and packaging are banned. Only biodegradable or recyclable packaging is permitted and must be properly labeled.
Sensitive sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food products, and automobiles also face additional restrictions. These include requirements for full disclosure of ingredients, potential side effects, or product performance details to prevent misleading claims.
