Spain has been a member of the EU since 1986. The EU has free trade agreements with other economic associations (e.g., the European Free Trade Association or EFTA) and countries, providing a higher level of mutual market access.

As a result of the U.S.-EU Trade Agreement Negotiations, announced in a joint statement in Washington in July 2018, an Executive Working Group was established to seek to reduce transatlantic barriers to trade, including the elimination of non-auto industrial tariffs and non-tariff barriers.
