In any foreign market, companies should consider several general principles for effective protection of their intellectual property. For background, link to our article on Protecting Intellectual Property and Stopfakes.gov for more resources. Rwanda enacted a new Intellectual Property Law, Law No. 055/2024 that came into force on July 31, 2024. This law repealed the previous IP legislation from 2009 and overhauled Rwanda’s IP framework, aligning it with international standards. It strengthened protections and streamlined procedures for copyrights, trademarks, patents, and industrial designs. Key reforms include clearer criteria for trademark distinctiveness, more flexible filing and compliance periods, provisions for opposition and cancellation, and enhanced enforcement mechanisms. These changes aim to foster innovation and support startups and businesses operating in Rwanda.
Rwanda is not listed in the USTR’s 2025 Special 301 Priority Watch or Watch List reports, indicating no significant IP enforcement concerns for U.S. rights holders. For details, see the 2025 Special 301 Report.
