The cultural diversity and low-income market in PNG create a challenging environment for U.S. firms and any other businesses to enter the market. To successfully enter the PNG market, remain, and thrive, U.S businesses will require sound local expertise, long-term relationships and partnerships. Because PNG is a low-income market there is a need for businesses to be aware of the local environment, competitors mainly from Australia and China, and customer demography. It is imperative that businesses travel to PNG or engage a local agent who has sound knowledge and expertise prior to engaging in any business deals.

Although English is the common official language, PNG has over 800 different language and diverse culture that are set on Melanesian traditions. It is important for U.S. businesses to understand local culture and establish local long-term relationships beneficial to all parties.

Given the historical ties between Australia and PNG, Australia continues to maintain a strong and visible presence in the country. There are Australian-owned businesses throughout the country with the majority concentrated in Port Moresby and Lae. There is also a growing presence of Asian businesses in all the 21 provinces of PNG including in some remote corners of the country.

With the U.S. Commercial Service office now established at the U.S. Embassy Port Moresby, interested businesses can obtain assistance to grow their product and service distribution networks and presence in PNG.  The reputation and quality of U.S. products have strong appeal in PNG, however, undertaking a due diligence check prior to any business engagement is important.
