Uzbekistan Waste Management Opportunities

Uzbekistan’s Reform Efforts Include Regulatory and Financial Commitments to Improving Its Waste Management Processes

Prime opportunities in the waste management sector are available to U.S. firms specializing in processing Uzbekistan’s 7 million tons of waste generated annually. Currently, only 23% of the country’s waste is being sorted and recycled, but benchmarks in the government’s Waste Management Strategy for the Period of 2019-2028 outline an ambitious goal of 60 percent. The government is seeking to provide modern waste management services in part through Public Private Partnerships with experienced companies.

Rural and urban solutions modeled to Uzbekistan’s varied geography of mountains, arid plains, and deserts, are sought to modernize Uzbekistan’s landfills and increase waste to energy capacity which will produce electricity for a growing population. Tax and customs exemptions are available to companies that can provide efficient solutions that create mainstream waste management systems. The government is partnering with international lending institutions like the ADB to fund its efforts.
