United Kingdom Defense Next Generation Communications

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) seeks innovative ideas from industry and academia that will help contribute to its development of next generation beyond line-of-sight communication (BLOS) capability.

The MOD currently relies heavily on BLOS communication technologies such as military High Frequency, troposcatter or satellite communications.  However, to maintain unimpeded communications in highly disruptive, congested, and contested environments, the MOD desires to change its conventional assumptions about BLOS capability.

Assisted by input from industry and academia, the MOD is seeking to build a pipeline of future BLOS technologies and have a diverse range of communication options to overcome any potential threat and to ensure that if one form of communications is denied, there are alternatives available.

The MOD seeks proposals from industry and academia that explore and develop novel BLOS communication options and alternatives to traditional methods that will provide advantages in highly disruptive and congested environments.

Some examples that the MOD seeks include:

•    BLOS system development.
•    Approaches to understand the “Channel”.
•    Signal processing for new approaches to BLOS communications.
•    Waveforms.
•    Solution hardware development.

For information on how to submit your ideas on novel beyond the line-of-sight communication technologies, or for information on other opportunities in the UK defense and security market, please contact PJ Menner at the U.S. Embassy London.
