United Kingdom Climate Initiatives

The UK is preparing for the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) which will be held in Glasgow, UK between 1 – 12 November 2021. In the run up to the event the Prime Minister has announced in April 2021 a radical new climate change commitments that aim to set the country on course to cut carbon emissions by 78% by 2035.

The UK’s recently published Industrial Decarbonization Strategy outlines how the industry can both decarbonize to achieve the net zero goal while remaining globally competitive. Last year, the Prime Minister also set out his Ten Point Plan which mobilizes over $16 billion of government investment to green infrastructure and expects over $48 as much private sector investment by 2030.

Some funds are already being distributed to specific projects. To reduce carbon emissions from public buildings such as hospitals, schools and council buildings, $1.3 billion has been directed to 429 projects across England. The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme funds low carbon heating systems, such as heat pumps, and energy efficiency measures like insulation and LED lighting.

The government is expected to introduce new rules on measuring the carbon performance of the UK’s largest commercial and industrial buildings, including office blocks and factories. This is already influencing those potentially affected. Organizations are looking for innovative technologies to help measure and reduce their carbon footprint. U.S. companies in this sector are now well positioned to succeed in the UK.

The Commercial Service in the UK is working relentlessly to support U.S. companies that can deliver solutions under the climate agenda. Get in touch for further information, market intelligence and direct opportunities for your business: Kristina.Schaferova@trade.gov.
