South Africa Infrastructure Development

Infrastructure development is critical to attaining South Africa’s long-term economic and social goals. Infrastructure delivery will be one of the most significant contributors to South Africa’s transition from a historically closed minerals economy to one that is globally and regionally integrated.

The South African Government launched the Sustainable Infrastructure Development System (SIDS) methodology in 2020 in conjunction with the establishment of the Investment and Infrastructure Office of the Presidency.  The goal of SIDS is to build a pipeline of projects utilizing an inclusive approach, including engagement with the Government at both the national and the provincial level, partnering with South African State-Owned Entities and Agencies, international Multilateral Development Banks, direct foreign investors, and strategic private sector associations.  For further information on the Investment and Infrastructure Office of the South African Presidency, visit: https://iio.org.za

As the demand for infrastructure in South Africa continues to grow, the government will need to leverage public and private funds to marshal investments to bridge the infrastructure divide.  New approaches to delivering infrastructure are needed, and so is innovative technology and effective collaboration between policymakers, sector agencies, financiers, and investors to fund and deliver projects to yield financial and non-financial returns for all stakeholders.

The South African Government encourages collaboration between local and U.S. technology suppliers and financiers to achieve their infrastructure goals in line with their National Development Plan (NDP).  Sectors identified in accordance with the NDP include:

Digital Infrastructure
Energy
Transport
Water and Sanitation
Agriculture and Agri-processing
Human Settlements (housing)
Rural Bridges new and upgrades

The partnership between the public and private sector (locally and internationally) is very important, especially when it comes to the implementation of sustainable, fit-for-purpose infrastructure.
