Geothermal Energy Romania

Romania Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy in Romania is primarily concentrated in the Eastern Carpathians, the Transylvanian Basin, and the Black Sea Coast, each at varying stages of development.

At present, this renewable resource is mainly used for district heating and spas, but interest is growing in leveraging it for electricity generation. Although geothermal energy remains an underutilized resource, there is significant potential and a growing commitment to expanding its use and maximizing its production capacity.

The Romanian Ministry of European Investments and Projects (MIPE) recently launched a call for proposals. The call aims to give local authorities up to 56 million euros to develop thermal energy production capacities from geothermal water.

This initiative uses European funds to finance the construction, modernization, and extension of power plants that produce thermal energy from geothermal water. This includes financing networks that bring thermal energy to the point of consumption, respectively to public buildings, boreholes and equipment necessary for the exploitation and reinjection of geothermal waters, as well as heat exchange installations, machinery and technical equipment required is to produce thermal energy from geothermal sources.

The value of each project should not exceed 8 million euros and needs to be a 100% non-refundable grant. The call for proposals is open until the end of 2025.
