Poland PGE's LTE450 Network

To accomplish climate neutrality by 2050, PGE is planning significant investments in low and zero emission power generation facilities and developing a modern transmission infrastructure system based on LTE technology with a 450 MHz band.

Innovative ICT solutions are crucial for PGE’s development and the function of the organization. The new communication system will provide dependable power transmission, and will enable the integration of renewable energy source generation, distribution and energy storage into the system.  LTE  is a proven technology and comes with a long list of proven applications, unlike the 5G standard, where applications are still being developed.

The schedule of actions includes: the launch of basic services in LTE450 network, network expansion throughout Poland and the introduction of new services, such as Internet of Things (IOT).  Initial implementation tests have been performed, and LTE-M operational tests will be completed by the end of 2020, paving the way for PGE to announce tenders in 2021 for the equipment necessary to implement the LTE450 network.

PGE has been developing the LTE450 network since 2018 and created, PGE Systemy, a special division within PGE to develop this task. PGE worked alongside Polish Distribution System Operators, representatives from the Ministry of Climate, the Ministry of Energy’s regulator office and other government organizations, to create a task force to establish the LTE45 standards in Poland.
