Czech Republic New EU's Digital Border-Control Systems
Summary: Beginning in 2025, the European Union will start implementing tools for digital controls at its borders to replace the manual stamping of passports. This fundamental change in border control management creates new opportunities for relevant U.S. companies.
There are two parts to the new system - the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) and the Entry/Exit System (EES). Travelers to the EU who do not need to require a visa to enter the Schengen Area (similar to the American Visa Waiver Program) will have to register in ETIAS before the trip and have to undergo EES’s authentication through biometric data at the borders. Biometric authentication systems are widely used in many areas in Czechia. There are local companies experienced in issuing biometric passports, online banking authentication, access controls, etc. These companies might be good partners for American companies in potential technology transfers or in need of certified service providers.
U.S. Companies have a strong reputation for innovative technology and security among the crossing borders and can greatly benefit from offering its long-established and tested system in strengthening European borders and their new measures in areas like:
- Goods and services supplies
- Digital systems, data protection, security breaches control, and other security services
- System integration, training, and certifications
- Compliance consulting and know-how
