Colombia's Railway Reactivation Plan

The Petro Administration’s infrastructure priority is to reactivate and develop Colombia’ neglected railway sector. Only 37% or 2,195 miles of the railway network is active. The Administration aims to activate another 1,180 miles of rail line. In addition, the National Development Plan provides long-term guarantees to planned railway projects including passenger, light rail, and freight lines.

In Colombia, the railway sector is operated by private companies. The National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) provides a concession over a freight corridor to private companies who manage its maintenance and operations. ANI is currently developing three railway corridors: La Dorada- Chiriguana, Bogota- Belencito, and the Pacific Corridor. The Belencito and the Pacific corridors are valued at USD 331 million and USD 1.3 billion USD respectively.

ANI is currently soliciting proposals for the repair and maintenance of the La Dorada- Chiriguana corridor with procurement opportunities valued at USD 15.8 million. This 324-mile-long freight corridor connects Colombia from the center to the Caribbean region. Proposed public works will encompass ballast improvements, rolling stock purchases, signaling and communication systems, bridge restoration services, and other railway products and services.

In October 2023, CS Colombia will invite U.S. railway company representatives to Colombia to explore these and other local opportunities.
