China Outdoor Sports

Chinese outdoor participants spent less than the equivalent of $2.75 per person in 2022, versus $41 to $110 in developed countries in Europe, America, and Asia, according to a report from China Merchants Securities.

Traditionally, sports like basketball, soccer, ping pong, and badminton have been favorites of   Chinese sports enthusiasts. In recent years, however, outdoor-related sports such as cycling, camping, and skateboarding have been gaining more popularity among new and younger-generation sports fans. Data from China’s Alibaba 2022 Singles’ Day sales promotion shows that camping equipment sales grew 115% from the previous year and skiing apparel was up 61.9%.

To boost the industry, 10,000 outdoor recreation areas including fields, stadiums, campgrounds, and other venues will be built in the next three years, the plan noted. It also added that China should offer more outdoor fitness and leisure products and enhance the application of augmented reality and virtual reality technologies to build more immersive spaces for outdoor sports.
