China Education

The number of students registered for the national college entrance examination (Gaokao) in 2023 reached a new high of 12.91 million, an increase of 980,000 from 2022, according to China’s Ministry of Education. According to an earlier report from China’s Ministry of Education, the gross enrollment rate of higher education is 59.6% in 2022, an increase of 1.8 percentage points over the previous year. The record high number of students registering for the national college entrance examination provides opportunities for U.S. universities to recruit more applicants from China to U.S. schools, for undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programs.

There is strong demand for U.S. higher education amongst Chinese students. Despite challenges presented by a global pandemic, China remained the largest source of international students in the United States for the 13th consecutive year, according to the Institute of International Educational Exchange’s 2022 Open Doors Report. The United States welcomed 290,086 Chinese students in the 2021/22 academic year. 109,492 Chinese students were enrolled in U.S. undergraduate programs and 123,182 in U.S. master’s and doctoral programs in the 2021-2022 school year.
