China Automotive Motorcycles

According to the China Association for Auto Manufacturers, China sold over 10.7 million motorcycles in the first half of 2022, a year-on-year growth of 46.6%. China is the world’s largest motorcycle market and motorcycles have become even more popular as a result of the pandemic, as they are seen as a less risky alternative to public transportation for commuting and recreation. In recent years, the sales of motorcycles have risen steadily though motorcycle driving restrictions have not been dramatically altered. Some cities ban motorcycle riding in general and some cities ban motorcycle riding in urban areas.

In the first half of 2022, 220,000 heavyweight motorcycles were sold, a year-on-year increase of 17.3%.  Foreign motorcycle brands account for the majority of heavyweight motorcycle sales. They have a good reputation for a combination of high quality and mature after-sales services including components, apparel, and member club activities. In China, heavyweight motorcycles are mainly used for leisure riding purposes and have become popular in major cities across the country.

The U.S. export of motorcycles to China has increased in recent years, especially high-end motorcycles. The growing demand for heavyweight motorcycles may provide opportunities to export U.S.-made motorcycles.
