Brazil Import Licenses Update

The Brazilian Federal Government has approved the use of a single license for multiple import transactions.

During the latter half of 2023, the Brazilian federal government implemented a new protocol called “Licença Flex”, which will streamline and cut costs associated with import clearance processes requiring licenses. The new protocol aims to address a longstanding bottleneck in import clearance processes in Brazil.

As a result, importers of U.S. goods can use a single license for multiple import transactions, though some exceptions apply. These changes benefit U.S. exporters with regular and consistent shipments of the same goods to Brazil. Previously, obtaining individual licenses could take up to 35 days, for each transaction.

While the updated procedure offers significant advantages, it is important to note that there may be constraints related to license timeframes, volume, and value limitations. U.S. exporters are advised to communicate with their importers and assess the option of issuing a single license applicable over an extended period.
