Malawi is an English- and Chichewa- speaking country of over 21 million people. Located in southeastern Africa, it has a surface area roughly the size of Pennsylvania. The country is landlocked by Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Traditionally, Malawi’s strongest industries are agriculture, wholesale and retail trade, tourism, and mining and minerals, with the most mineral potential lying in uranium, phosphates (apatite), bauxite, kaolinitic, coal, kyanite, limestones, rare earth metals, graphite, sulphides (pyrite and pyrrhotite), titanium minerals, and vermiculite. The government of Malawi hopes to increase the contribution of minerals to the GDP from less than one percent to ten percent by 2063. Tourism accounts for around seven percent of employment in Malawi, making it a critical industry for economic growth and development.
