While U.S. businesses have not historically been represented in this sector in Mali, there is an untapped market here. The Malian government has expressed a desire for U.S. investment in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector. Mali is seeking win-win partnerships to strengthen ICT infrastructure, digitalize government, and position itself as a regional technology hub (see further information in the Digital Economy section). Imports and investments in satellites, data centers, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity could also provide opportunities for U.S. businesses. The Malian government specifically encourages U.S. companies to compete for public tenders – posted publicly on the Ministry of Finance’s website – for projects in the ICT sector.
Leading Sub-sectors
Mobile telecommunications companies such as Orange and Malitel dominate the ICT sector. Mobile money transfer platforms, such as Wave and OrangeMoney, are also increasing in popularity as internet and mobile network penetration increases in Mali.
Opportunities
Mali continues to rely on 3G technology and is moving to digitalize government services and administration, presenting opportunities for investment in sectors as diverse as internet and mobile network infrastructure to software, hardware, artificial intelligence (AI), data centers, and cyber security. U.S companies have also found opportunities in the civil aviation sector, in areas such as digital immigration services.
