Autonomous Systems and Robotics

Lithuania has emerged as a dynamic hub for innovation in autonomous systems, robotics, and uncrewed systems, leveraging its strong technological expertise and strategic location in Europe. The country is developing autonomous transport solutions, including self-driving vehicles and smart logistics systems, which are supported by advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities.

Lithuania is also a leader in the development and deployment of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) such as drones, which are increasingly used for applications ranging from environmental monitoring to defense and security. Lithuania’s defense drone industry has rapidly developed since 2022 by creating UAS for use in Ukraine, with two Lithuanian companies listed in a U.S. defense publication’s July 2025 list of the top 100 global drone manufacturers. Lithuanian drone products comply with NATO standards and include no Chinese components due to Lithuanian restrictions on defense trade supply chain security that entered into effect in 2025. About 15 companies currently focus on defense-related UAS and all field test their products on the battlefield in Ukraine. Lithuania is systematically integrating unmanned aerial systems across its armed forces at all levels and plans to dedicate approximately 200 million euros for drone procurements until 2030, an average of 30 million euros a year.

The nation’s robust research and development ecosystem, bolstered by partnerships among academia, industry, and government, has fostered cutting-edge advancements in robotics, enabling the creation of versatile systems for industrial automation, healthcare, and other sectors.

Biotechnologies

Lithuania has established itself as a growing center for biotechnology, driven by its strong scientific community, advanced research infrastructure, and supportive government policies. The country excels in areas such as genetic engineering, biopharmaceuticals, and molecular biology, with Lithuanian companies and research institutions contributing to breakthroughs in medical diagnostics, drug development, and industrial biotechnology. Lithuania’s biotechnology sector benefits from close collaboration between academia and industry, fostering innovation and attracting international partnerships.

Nuclear and Renewable Energy Generation and Storage

Lithuania is advancing as a leader in renewable energy generation and storage, driven by its commitment to energy independence and sustainability. Lithuania signed an intergovernmental agreement on civil nuclear energy cooperation with the United States in 2024. Lithuania plans to build up to five small modular reactors (SMRs) by 2038 to provide reliable, consistent baseload energy and intends to select an SMR technology by the end of 2028. Lithuania also aims to produce all its electricity from renewables and increase its solar capacity by 500 percent by 2030. The country has made significant investments in wind, solar, and bioenergy projects, aiming to transition to a fully renewable energy system. Lithuania is also at the forefront of smart grid technologies, integrating digital solutions to optimize energy distribution, enhance efficiency, and support decentralized energy production. Its energy storage sector is growing rapidly, with innovative solutions such as battery systems and energy management platforms designed to stabilize the grid and store surplus renewable energy.

Financial Technologies

Lithuania has become a prominent hub for financial technologies in Europe, leveraging its innovative regulatory framework and strategic location. The country offers a favorable environment for fintech startups, supported by streamlined licensing processes and a forward-thinking central bank. Lithuania specializes in areas such as digital payments, blockchain technologies, and e-money solutions, attracting global companies and fostering a vibrant ecosystem of financial innovation. With a focus on security, transparency, and scalability, Lithuania’s fintech sector continues to drive advancements in financial services.

Space Technologies and Systems

Lithuania is rapidly developing its space technologies and systems sector, showcasing its growing expertise in satellite technology, remote sensing, and space data applications. The country has successfully launched small satellites, contributing to advancements in Earth observation, telecommunications, and scientific research. Lithuania’s strong engineering and IT sectors provide a solid foundation for innovation in space systems, with local companies and research institutions actively collaborating on international space projects. Recognized for its strength in niche technologies like lasers, 30% of Lithuania’s space projects have received EU funding, compared with the EU national average of 17%.

Global Business Navigator Chatbot Beta

Welcome to the Global Business Navigator, an artificial intelligence (AI) Chatbot from the International Trade Administration (ITA). This tool, currently in beta version testing, is designed to provide general information on the exporting process and the resources available to assist new and experienced U.S. exporters. The Chatbot, developed using Microsoft’s Azure AI services, is trained on ITA’s export-related content and aims to quickly get users the information they need. The Chatbot is intended to make the benefits of exporting more accessible by understanding non-expert language, idiomatic expressions, and foreign languages.

Limitations

As a beta product, the Chatbot is currently being tested and its responses may occasionally produce inaccurate or incomplete information. The Chatbot is trained to decline out of scope or inappropriate requests. The Chatbot’s knowledge is limited to the public information on the Export Solutions web pages of Trade.gov, which covers a wide range of topics on exporting. While it cannot provide responses specific to a company’s product or a specific foreign market, its reference pages will guide you to other relevant government resources and market research. Always double-check the Chatbot’s responses using the provided references or by visiting the Export Solutions web pages on Trade.gov. Do not use its responses as legal or professional advice. Inaccurate advice from the Chatbot would not be a defense to violating any export rules or regulations.

Privacy

The Chatbot does not collect information about users and does not use the contents of users’ chat history to learn new information. All feedback is anonymous. Please do not enter personally identifiable information (PII), sensitive, or proprietary information into the Chatbot. Your conversations will not be connected to other interactions or accounts with ITA. Conversations with the Chatbot may be reviewed to help ITA improve the tool and address harmful, illegal, or otherwise inappropriate questions.

Translation

The Chatbot supports a wide range of languages. Because the Chatbot is trained in English and responses are translated, you should verify the translation. For example, the Chatbot may have difficulty with acronyms, abbreviations, and nuances in a language other than English.
