Information Session: Get Ready to Do Business in Sub-Saharan Africa
This session will provide market overviews on water solution and irrigation opportunities for U.S. firms in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Mozambique, Kenya, and Tanzania.
- Demand for food imports has increased significantly on the African continent in recent years due to a variety of factors, including population growth, climate change, logistical inefficiencies, rising incomes and dietary changes.
- This demand means the core priorities for African governments in the agriculture sector are increasing food security, upskilling farmers, creating sustainable employment opportunities and import substitution.
- Smallholder farmers make up 70% of the population in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), but productivity isn’t increasing fast enough.
- With the right inputs, the productivity gap can be bridged, including the adoption of irrigation systems for local farmers. Currently, only about 5% of the 183 million hectares of cultivated land in SSA benefits from some type of agricultural water management.
