Design & Construction: Tapping into China & Hong Kong’s Push for Green Building

The HK Commercial Service Design & Construction team will host a joint- webinar with our counterparts in mainland China to discuss green building opportunities for U.S. companies as both Hong Kong and Beijing implement new measures to cut carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 and 2050 respectively. Local developers and construction companies are seeking innovative designs, environmentally friendly materials, and technology solutions to meet these new requirements.

The webinar will include a panel of experts from the Hong Kong Green Building Council, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, the Urban Land Institute, and the International WELL Building Institute who will speak on how U.S. companies can add-value to these initiatives. Following the webinar, participants will be invited to a virtual business matchmaking session to connect with local Chinese stakeholders.

Successful Fintech Networking Reception

The HK Commercial Service Fintech team recently hosted a fintech networking reception with AMCHAM Hong Kong at their newly opened office in Central. The goal of the event was to bring together senior leaders at U.S. based companies with local financial institutions and regulators to discuss latest industry trends and market challenges.

The event was very well-received, and the attendees expressed interest for more regular meetups. In view of the feedback, the team is looking at organizing a roundtable event September for participants to discuss industry trends and updates on new regulations.

Franchising News: U.S. health and fitness brands betting big on Hong Kong

With Hong Kong gradually normalizing its Covid-19 protocols, the fitness industry is beginning to rebound as two U.S.-based fitness franchises, Anytime Fitness and Snap Fitness recently announced plans grow their presence in Hong Kong. The fitness industry in Hong Kong, with annual revenues of USD$ 500 million, went through a tumultuous period between 2020-2022 when fitness centers succumbed to stringent COVID social distancing measures.

These two American firms are eager to grab market share by offering greater flexibility to members. Anytime Fitness currently has 3 locations and plans to open 100 new centers in the next 3-5 years. Snap Fitness has 12 and is looking to double the number by next year.

The Commercial Service Team expects more U.S. fitness companies to consider Hong Kong for their international growth plans to take advantage of its status as a gateway for China.

A Message from our Senior Commercial Officer

Bradley Harker, Senior Commercial Officer, U.S. Commercial Service Hong Kong

As we wrap up June of 2022, Hong Kong has returned to relative normalcy as the COVID pandemic slowly becomes a normal part of life in the territory.  With case numbers recently hovering around 1800 per day, it is heartening to see both citizens and the Hong Kong government taking this in stride. With the swearing in of Hong Kong’s new Chief Executive John Lee on July 1, we look forward to the further reduction and eventual removal of hotel quarantine requirements for travelers coming into Hong Kong and the reemergence of Hong Kong to its long-standing position as one of the world’s leading international business hubs.
