Steven Haines Sworn In as Assistant Secretary of Commerce

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The International Trade Administration (ITA) announced that Steven Haines was sworn in by Secretary Howard Lutnick on June 3, 2026 as the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Analysis. In this role, Assistant Secretary Haines will lead ITA’s Industry and Analysis (I&A) business unit dedicated to producing in-depth trade analysis, driving policy solutions with industry and analytical insights, and strengthening the global competitiveness of U.S. industry.

Steven Haines was nominated by President Donald J. Trump for the position, and the United States Senate voted to confirm him on May 18, 2026.

“Steven has spent his career working at the intersection of trade, diplomacy, economic security, and national security,” said Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade William Kimmitt. “His leadership will help ensure that I&A continues to deliver results for American workers, businesses, and industries as we execute President Trump’s America First trade and investment agenda.”

Assistant Secretary Haines brings nearly two decades of experience in advancing U.S. economic and national security priorities, including most recently as a senior advisor at the Department of Commerce.  His public policy and private sector roles have included positions in the Office of Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN), the Department of State’s Office of China Coordination, the Office of the Deputy Secretary of Defense for China, the global oil and gas industry facilitating U.S. energy equipment exports, and as a management consultant at Ernst & Young where he addressed defense industrial base resilience to support domestic manufacturing and supply chains.
