For more than twenty years, Mudd Law has represented Internet, space, and technology businesses in intellectual property, litigation, regulatory, and transactional matters. Through its work and attorneys’ thought leadership, Mudd Law has become internationally recognized in these areas. It thrives on providing innovative, forward-thinking, and strategic advice to domestic and international clients. As a cutting-edge firm at the forefront of emerging technologies, Mudd Law constantly seeks opportunities to help businesses thrive in the nuanced landscape of global commerce and export law.

In particular, Mudd Law possesses experience helping businesses comply with International Traffic and Arms Regulations (ITAR), Export Administration Regulations (EAR), and other matters involving the export, import, sharing, and use of items and information that may fall within the scope of the United States Munitions List (USML) and other applicable sources. At its foundation, this representation includes educating our clients on and navigating them through the nuances of relevant export controls and regulatory frameworks.  As an example, despite the suggestively narrow nature of its name, the USML (and by extension ITAR) encompasses a wide range of technologies extending far beyond munitions and other military supplies. More tangibly, our representation in this area includes applying for relevant registrations, exemptions, and licenses on behalf of our diverse clientele.

Mudd Law believes it important to develop and nurture its international relationships. Recently, the firm became elected as a member to the International Astronautical Federation. Its attorneys maintain memberships, leadership positions, and collegial relationships within prominent international organizations that enable the firm to deliver its business clients with worldwide reach, perspective, and strategic partners.

As an example, the firm’s principal attorney, Charles Lee Mudd Jr., has been a member of the International Technology Law Association (ITechLaw) for more than twenty-five years and recently completed tenure as a member of its Board of Directors.  He has been admitted to the International Institute of Space Law.  He maintains memberships in the American Astronomical Society, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, European Centre for Space Law, IEEE, Internet Law Leadership Summit, and the National Space Society.  Charles currently serves on the Board of Directors for NewSpace Chicago. He also regularly engages in thought leadership. He regularly speaks and writes on matters related to the firm’s practice areas. He has participated in and presented at United Nations conferences, provided testimony before a federal agency, and lectured at universities in the United States and abroad. Most recently, he became an adjunct professor in space law at his alma mater Quinnipiac University School of Law.  Over the last several years, he completed graduate astrophysics coursework at the University of Chicago and currently proceeds through its graduate program in data analytics, AI, and Machine Learning.

With its main office in Chicago, Illinois, the firm also operates offices in Houston, Texas and Park City, Utah.

S Massie Consulting LLC provides export consulting, compliance programs, education and training for companies to navigate the complicated laws and regulations for US exports.

Export compliance is a topic that, if not properly addressed, could create major challenges for your company. Penalties for violating US export law can include up to $1m in fines and 20 years imprisonment per violation, loss of export privileges, and more.

The purpose of an Export Compliance Program (ECP) is to create a set of written policies and procedures that help your company operate its export activities in accordance with US Government regulations. Investing in an ECP that is well integrated into your current business processes can lend predictability, consistency, and security to your export transactions and serves as a training program for employees.

Key items for a compliance program:
•    Documented product jurisdiction and classification determinations
•    Written policies and step-by-step procedures for export operations and personnel
•    Training for all employees on export compliance
•    Checks and safeguards, including screening of parties and activities, throughout all export processes
•    Continuous monitoring and audit systems to ensure compliance and detect violations
•    Detailed recordkeeping practices

Additionally for manufacturers, being compliant with ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) means you can fulfill contracts for articles that fall under ITAR classifications.

Creating your own ECP can take well over 200 hours. S Massie Consulting can relieve this burden from your company and staff by developing a customized program for you, specific to your needs with training and guidance for your company throughout the entire process!
