March 2025 Total International Travel Volume to and from the United States


 

In March 2025, international visitor arrivals to the United States totaled 5,410,331, a decrease of 8.1 percent from to March 2024


 

Outbound travel departures from the United States by U.S. citizens totaled 9,128,717 in March 2025, an increase of 1.2 percent from to March 2024

 

Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office show that in March 2025*:

*Note: Easter was on March 31st in 2024 and on April 20th in 2025, impacting March 2024 and March 2025 comparisons.

International Arrivals to the United States

  • Total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume to the United States of 5,410,331, decreased 8.1 percent compared to March 2024 and represented 86.4 percent of the pre-COVID total visitor volume reported for March 2019.
     
  • Overseas visitor volume to the United States of 2,391,265 decreased 11.6 percent from March 2024.
     
  • The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Canada (1,704,688), Mexico (1,314,378), the United Kingdom (283,561), Japan (164,846), and India (152,105). Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 66.9 percent of total international arrivals.
     
  • The top 5 overseas tourism arrivals for March were the United Kingdom (219,797), Japan (133,279), Brazil (123,915), Germany (105,473), and India (94,744).
     
  • The top 5 overseas business arrivals for March were the United Kingdom (60,951), India (42,546), Germany (31,509), Japan (28,876), and China (23,327).
     
  • The top 5 overseas student arrivals for March were China (22,651), India (14,815), South Korea (5,068), Brazil (3,660), and Taiwan (2,858).

International Departures from the United States

  • Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States of 9,128,717 increased 1.2 percent compared to March 2024 and were 109 percent of total departures in pre-pandemic March 2019.
     
  • The year-to-date (YTD) market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 51.4 percent and overseas was 48.6 percent.
     
  • Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 3,668,938 (40.2 percent of total departures for March). Canada recorded a year-over-year (YOY) decrease of 8.6 percent.
     
  • Combined YTD, Mexico (10,440,250) and the Caribbean (3,017,619) accounted for 55.8 percent of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures.
     
  • Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 1,592,684 departures. This accounted for 17.4 percent of all departures in March. Outbound visitation to Europe in March 2025 increased 4.1 percent compared to March 2024.

ADIS/I-94 Visitor Arrivals

I-92/APIS International Air Passengers  

The ADIS/I-94 Visitor Arrivals Program, in cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), provides a count of visitor arrivals (Overseas+Canada+Mexico) to the United States (with stays of 1-night or more and visiting under certain visa types) and is used to calculate U.S. travel and tourism exports. The APIS/I-92 Program provides information on non-stop international air traffic between the United States and other countries. The data has been collected from the Department of Homeland Security - Customs and Border Protection’s Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) since July 2010. The APIS based “I-92” system provides air traffic data on the following parameters: number of passengers, by country, airport, scheduled or chartered, U.S. Flag, foreign flag, citizens and non-citizens.
