June 2023 Total International Travel Volume

—In June 2023, International Visitor Arrivals to the United States totaled 4,996,037, an increase of 24.5% Compared to June 2022
—U.S. Citizen Outbound Travel Departures from the United States Totaled 10,377,992 in June 2023, an Increase of 20% Compared to June 2022

 Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) show that in June 2023:

International Arrivals to the United States

  • Total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume to the United States of 4,996,037, increased 24.5% compared to June 2022 and represents 79% of the pre-COVID total visitor volume reported for June 2019, down from the prior month’s 80.1%.
     
  • Overseas visitor volume to the United States of 2,551,730 increased +23.5% from June 2022.
     
  • June 2023 was the twenty-seventh consecutive month that total non-U.S. resident international arrivals to the United States increased year-over-year (YOY).
     
  • Of the top 20 tourist-generating countries to the United States, Colombia (with 100,935 visitors), Spain (with 60,626) and Ireland (with 40,153) reported a decrease in visitor volume in June 2023 compared to June 2022, with a -9.7%, -5.8%, and -2.5% change, respectively.
     
  • The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Canada (1,353,299), Mexico (1,091,008), the United Kingdom (276,208), India (172,383) and Germany (131,890). Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 61% of total international arrivals.

International Departures from the United States

  • Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States of 10,377,992 increased 20% compared to June 2022 and were 99% of total departures in pre-pandemic June 2019.
     
  • June 2023 was the twenty-seventh consecutive month that total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States increased on a YOY basis.
     
  • June 2023 YTD total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States totaled 46,637,044, a YOY increase of 31.5%. The YTD market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 48.9% and overseas was 51.1%.
     
  • Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 3,173,421 (30.6% of total departures for June and 37.8% YTD). Canada recorded a YOY increase of 42.2%.
     
  • Combined YTD, Mexico (17,616,073) and the Caribbean (5,582,126) accounted for 49.7% of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures, down 2.6 percentage points from May 2023.
     
  • Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 2,694,228 departures. This accounted for 26% of all departures in June and 20.0% YTD. Outbound visitation to Europe in June 2023 increased 19.3% compared to June 2022.

ADIS/I-94 Visitor Arrivals

I-92/APIS International Air Passengers  

The ADIS/I-94 Visitor Arrivals Program, in cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), provides a count of visitor arrivals (Overseas+Canada+Mexico) to the United States (with stays of 1-night or more and visiting under certain visa types) and is used to calculate U.S. travel and tourism exports. The APIS/I-92 Program provides information on non-stop international air traffic between the United States and other countries. The data has been collected from the Department of Homeland Security - Customs and Border Protection’s Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) since July 2010. The APIS based “I-92” system provides air traffic data on the following parameters: number of passengers, by country, airport, scheduled or chartered, U.S. Flag, foreign flag, citizens and non-citizens.
