July 2022 International Air Passenger Travel

  • Air Traffic Passenger Enplanements Up 87% YOY
  • Air Passenger Travel Between the U.S. and Europe up 242%


Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) show that in July 2022:

U.S.-International air traffic passenger enplanements (APIS/“I-92” arrivals + departures) totaled 21.165 million in July 2022, up 87% compared to July 2021 and, enplanements reached 84% of pre-pandemic July 2019 volume.

Originating Non-Stop Air Travel in July 2022

  • Non-U.S. Citizen Air Passenger Arrivals to the United States from foreign countries, totaled 4.243 million, +112% compared to July 2021 and (-30.0%) compared to June 2019.

On a related note, overseas ‘visitor’ arrivals (ADIS/ “I-94”) totaled 2.589 million in July 2022, the fourth consecutive month overseas visitor arrivals exceeded 2.0 million. July overseas ‘visitor’ arrivals reached 64.7% of pre-pandemic July 2019 volume, up from 59.3% in June 2022. (See July I-94 Advance Release https://www.trade.gov/i-94-arrivals-program)

  • U.S. Citizen Air Passenger Departures from the United States to foreign countries totaled 6.230 million, +67% compared to July 2021 and only (-3.5%) compared to July 2019.

World Region Highlights (APIS/ “I-92” arrivals + departures)

  • Top arrivals countries were Mexico 3.54 million, Canada 2.39 million, the United Kingdom 1.79 million, Germany 1.02 million and the Dominican Republic 975k.
     
  • International Regional Air Travel to/from the United States: 
    • Europe totaled 6.943 million passengers, up 242% over July 2021, but down (-15.9%) over July 2019.
       
    • South/Central America/Caribbean totaled 5.222 million, up 23% over July 2021, but down only (-6.3%) over July 2019.
       
    • Asia totaled 1.291 million passengers, up 248% over July 21, but still down (-62.5%) over July 2019.
       
  • Top U.S. ports serving international locations were New York (JFK) 2.96 million, Miami (MIA) 2.02 million, Los Angeles (LAX) 1.85 million, Newark (EWR) 1.38 million and Chicago (ORD) 1.32 million.
     
  • Top foreign ports serving U.S. locations were London Heathrow (LHR) 1.53 million, Cancun (CUN) 1.22 million, Toronto (YYZ) 970k, Paris (CDG) 757k, and Mexico City (MEX) 735k.

I-92/APIS International Air Passengers

The APIS/I-92 Program provides information on non-stop international air traffic between the United States and other countries. The data has been collected from the Department of Homeland Security - Customs and Border Protection’s Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) since July 2010. The APIS based “I-92” system provides air traffic data on the following parameters: number of passengers, by country, airport, scheduled or chartered, U.S. Flag, foreign flag, citizens and non-citizens.
