The Aluminum Import Monitoring and Analysis (AIM) System, under the Department of Commerce, collects and publishes early warning data of aluminum product imports. By design, this information provides stakeholders valuable information on aluminum trade with the United States. In June 2021, Commerce launched the Aluminum Import Monitoring and Analysis (AIM) system, which is comprised of the aluminum import licensing application platform and an interactive public AIM monitor. More information regarding the new AIM licensing requirements and new AIM monitor features is available below:

Aim One-Page Summary [262KB]

AIM, through the import monitor, provides an early indication on aluminum imports by publishing near real-time aggregate data on aluminum imports into the United States. These data incorporate information collected from aluminum license applications and publicly released Census data. The data are displayed in tables and graphs for users to analyze various levels and changes in aluminum trade involving the United States.

AIM is updated weekly on Wednesday incorporating the last seven days of new license data received that week. The other aluminum monitors are updated monthly at the beginning of each month after the release of Census data. Updates will always be published the day after the final Census data is published.

Aluminum Country of Smelt and Country of Most Recent Cast Dashboards

These monitors contain never before seen supply chain information collected from aluminum import licenses. These monitors make it possible to track where imported aluminum products were most recently cast (country of cast) and provide insight into where primary aluminum used to make the imported products were sourced from (country of smelt).

Please see the aluminum production process to obtain a definition for the country of smelt and country of cast, which can be different, and list of countries with currently operating primary aluminum smelters for your reference.

Collects and publishes early warning data (collected from aluminum licenses) about U.S. imports of aluminum products.

Country of Most Recent Cast Dashboard

This dashboard displays country of most recent cast data collected from AIM's licensing application data. The country of most cast applies to the country where the aluminum (with or without alloying elements) was last liquified by heat and cast into a solid state.

Country of Smelt Dashboard

This dashboard displays information about where the largest and second largest volumes of primary aluminum used in the manufacture of the product was smelted. It applies to the countries where the largest and second largest volumes of new aluminum metal are produced from alumina (or aluminum oxide) by the electrolytic Hall–Héroult process.
