WASHINGTON – Today, the World Customs Organization (WCO) announced the election of Ian Saunders as its next Secretary General. As Secretary General, Saunders will lead the only intergovernmental body whose mission is to enhance the effectiveness of customs administrations worldwide.
In recognition of Saunders’ successful election, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Marisa Lago issued the following statement:
“Congratulations to my colleague and friend, Ian Saunders, on his election today to serve as Secretary General of the World Customs Organization. I have come to know Ian during his tenure as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Hemisphere, where he’s worked on enhancing our commercial engagement across the Western Hemisphere. The WCO has chosen well in electing Ian to serve as its next leader. I am certain that WCO members will come to value and benefit from Ian’s thoughtful, principled and inclusive leadership at such a critical time, in the same way that the International Trade Administration and the Commerce Department as a whole have. Congratulations, Ian.”
