  • The U.S. Commercial Service in Mexico City is seeking a student for a Commercial Service Intern position.
  • Position name: MEX Internship Commercial Service.
  • Closing Date: 01/26/2024 for summer period and 05/03/2024 for fall period
  • Duration: Spring/Fall: Part-time - 20 hours/week. Schedule may be adapted to the student’s needs.
                        Summer: Full time 40 hours/week
  • This is a volunteer position, under a Gratuitous Service Agreement. There are no benefits, compensation, or future employment rights attached to this internship.

Basic Functions of Position

The volunteer intern will be assigned to report to one or more commercial officers in the Commercial Section of U.S. Embassy Mexico City (CS Mexico) in carrying out the following duties to support the promotion of U.S. exports of goods, services, and investment attraction.

1.    Support appointments, events, and special projects. This includes helping maintain CS Mexico event calendars, arrange conferences, and manage communications and correspondence in English and Spanish. Help manage relationships and timely communications with the offices of senior business, government officials, and other offices within the Embassy as well as update fact sheets, marketing materials, and reference information. Approx. 40%.

2.    Assist Commercial Specialists in basic industry research, scheduling meetings for fee-based services, and supporting trade events such as trade shows, exhibitions, and trade missions. Specific responsibilities rely on both English and Spanish skills and include organizing logistics and guest lists, distributing promotional materials, conducting telephone or email follow-up, and assisting in reception duties at certain CS Mexico events.  Approx. 40%.

3.    Handle telephone and email inquiries in English and Spanish, such as providing contact information of U.S. companies and commercial organizations, basic information on exporting to Mexico, and promoting CS Mexico services and products. Assist in producing translations in English and Spanish; building, inputting, and checking accuracy of database information; and conducting follow-up with clients to obtain commercial success information for Written Impact Narratives (WINs). Approx 15%.

4.    Review and assist in updating the external websites www.trade.gov/mexico-selectusa and www.trade.gov/mexico as well as supporting social media activities. Approx. 5%.

Qualifications

At least two (2) years of university studies in International Business, International Relations, Economics, Marketing, or Logistics. Must be enrolled in an academic program at the time of application. Professional experience may substitute for academic study.  Requires Level III (Good Working Knowledge) Spanish speaking/reading/writing and Level IV (Fluent) English speaking/reading/writing. Must be a United States Citizen.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria

Applicants will go through and selected via interview process. Availability from May to August 2024 (summer period), and August to December 2024 (fall period). Part time position, with minimum of 20 hours/week that are negotiable and flexible to accommodate candidate’s academic schedule. 

A partial background check is required by the U.S. Government, which consists of: Fair Credit Report, and fingerprint charts. Candidate must submit a Resume, signed Declaration of Federal Employment, Volunteer Service Agreement and Security Assurance Check forms.
