Uruguay Data Centers

Uruguay has recently seen rapid growth in its data center sector, driven by newly built subsea fiber-optic cables and data centers, strong ICT infrastructure and increasing demand for digital services. U.S. companies in data center development, cloud integration, cybersecurity and safety and security solutions are well-positioned to enter Uruguay’s expanding digital market.

Uruguay is a regional leader in digital infrastructure, ranking first in Latin America for e-Government development, ICT adoption, telecommunications quality and software exports per capita – with exports totaling $2.17 billion, over 80% of which go to the U.S. In 2025, Google completed construction of its Firmina subsea cable, linking Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Punta del Este, Uruguay – Uruguay’s fourth international cable and second U.S. connection – significantly boosting low-latency transmission and strengthening Uruguay’s local digital infrastructure.

As Uruguay receives increasing volumes of data from the U.S., the demand for expanded data processing and computing infrastructure will grow accordingly. Uruguay’s cloud services are expected to grow by 18.5% per year through 2029. In 2024, Google broke ground on an $850 million hyperscale data center in Canelones, Uruguay it’s second and largest in Latin America. This development, alongside Antel’s Tier III data center in Pando, demonstrates strong confidence in Uruguay’s digital ecosystem and reflects the country’s expanding capacity to support large-scale digital operations. Such projects demand advanced safety and security solutions that protect critical infrastructure and ensure operational resiliency, offering significant opportunities for U.S. firms in this sector. Over 90% of Uruguay’s population has access to broadband internet, and more than 80% of households are connected via fiber-to-the-home. With a 98% ICT literacy rate, hyperscale data centers and high-speed fiber-optic connections with the U.S., Uruguay is well-positioned to support complex technology solutions and services.

Uruguay serves as a clear and cogent gateway for firms looking to establish data center and expand ICT operations in Latin America. To bolster its ICT leadership, the Uruguayan government launched Uruguay Innova in May 2025 – a program designed to streamline financing and regulatory processes for companies in innovation and ICT. The country’s Free Trade Zones – offering tax exemptions – and a 99% renewable energy grid make it an attractive destination for sustainable, cost-efficient operations. Further, Uruguay has strong rule of law and maintains a record of political, social, and economic stability, offering a safe and reliable environment.

Uruguay’s push to expand digital infrastructure presents significant opportunities for U.S. firms specializing in data center infrastructure, cloud services, cybersecurity and safety and security solutions.
