UK AI Growth Zone

As part of a wider campaign to position the UK as a global leader in AI innovation and development, the UK Government has opened applications for AI Growth Zones. These zones will unlock investment in AI-enabled data centers and support infrastructure by improving access to power and providing planning support. Applications are invited from regional and local authorities in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as from industry players, including data center developers and energy firms.

Key requirements for AI Growth Zones include:

•    Power Availability: Sites must demonstrate access to at least 500MW of power capacity by 2030.
•    Water Availability and Discharge: Sufficient access to water to support at least 500MW of AI infrastructure.
•    Land Availability: A minimum of 100 acres of land available for construction by 2028.
•    Planning: Existing planning permission or a robust plan to secure full planning consent by 2028.
•    Connectivity: Strong, reliable, and readily available digital connectivity (fibre and mobile).

Sites that can meet this criteria will be viewed favorably, particularly those that can demonstrate regional ecosystems, local benefits, and efficient energy solutions. The application process will stay open indefinitely.

U.S. companies are globally recognized for their innovative technology and strong after-sales support, giving them a competitive edge in the UK market. The UK is also a particularly attractive destination for U.S. businesses due to the shared language and similar business practices. U.S. companies with a track record for deploying cutting-edge technology in data centers and energy provision, will have a significant advantage.

Interested U.S. businesses can submit an application to aigrowthzones@dsit.gov.uk.
