Taiwan Net-Zero Emissions By 2050

On the margins of COP-26 the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, Taiwan pledged to reduce its carbon emissions and reach “net zero” by 2050. To meet this goal, Taiwan is now developing revisions to laws that will incorporate net-zero emissions targets by 2050.

On October 30, 2021, Taiwan Minister of Economic Affairs, Wang Mei-Hua, proposed a transition framework called ‘’2x2 Net-Zero.’’  According to the framework, Taiwan will begin its shift to a low carbon economy by utilizing mature green energy and carbon reduction technologies.  Over the long term, the Island will target zero net emissions by investing in hydrogen energy, the circular economy, and carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies and solutions.

During a virtual press conference on November 6, 2021, in Glasgow, eight major Taiwanese high-tech companies including ACER, AUO, ASUS, Delta Electronics, LiteOn , Pegatron, TSMC and Taiwan Microsoft announced their commitment to use 100 percent renewable energy in their manufacturing processes by 2050. These companies represent a majority of Taiwan’s 60 percent share of the global semiconductor market and 80 percent of Taiwan’s network security hardware manufacturing.

U.S. companies supplying products and services that offer significant improvements over existing carbon-intensive technologies can benefit from new opportunities brought about by “2x2 Net-Zero”.  Opportunities include, but are not limited to, emission reduction technologies and applications in energy; water; construction and building materials; waste management and processing; and manufacturing, agriculture, and transportation.  Significant opportunities exist in carbon capture and utilization and storage (CCUS) solutions.
