Taiwan Energy Industry

Taiwan is entering a period of rapid electricity demand growth, driven by the expansion of artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing, and data centers. In response, Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) is preparing to tender major projects within the next 12–24 months, creating a time-sensitive window for U.S. firms with experience in rapid capacity expansion, grid resilience, and reliable power infrastructure to engage with local utility and industrial stakeholders.

Taiwan’s annual electricity demand growth is projected to more than double, reaching approximately 2.8% growth through 2033. To support this surge, Taipower expects over 5 gigawatts of new power demand between 2026 and 2030, with a single advanced wafer fab consuming up to 200 megawatts. Securing a reliable electricity supply has become a critical priority for the island’s economic and industrial development.

The anticipated buildout creates opportunities for U.S. suppliers of gas turbines and power generation equipment, grid modernization and substation technologies, transmission equipment, energy storage systems, data center power and cooling infrastructure, and renewable energy components.  Taipower will tender the Xiehe Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Project, the restart projects for the Kuosheng and Maanshan nuclear power plants, and the Shenao Battery Storage Project by the end of 2026 or in 2027. On June 18, 2026, Taipower announced that it will invest approximately $170 million (NTD 5 billion) to renovate underground power transmission lines in six metropolitan areas.
