Overview

Several local innovators developing AI algorithms trained on local datasets, with the most active use cases include:

  • Chronic disease management: Mobile health apps and AI tools are improving medicine adherence. This is vital to manage HIV treatment as well as rising chronic NCD’s such as heart disease that require daily medication.
  • Diagnostics and Imaging: AI already has been implemented to help diagnose early detection of lung disease and Cancer.
  • Clinical Support and Decision Making: Chatbots and apps are in play already, such as SA Doctors, which help with identifying symptoms and treatments, triage, and health education.
  • Administrative: Optimizing workflows, especially in a hospital setting. Many doctors have already implemented an AI system that helps with appointment scheduling and management.

 

Regulatory Landscape
The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has implemented requirements for AI/ML-enabled medical devices to ensure patient safety, efficacy, and compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). U.S. companies entering this market should build POPIA compliance and SAHPRA registration into go-to-market planning from the outset.

Opportunities for U.S. Companies
This sector is positioned for significant growth over the next decade. It is transitioning from experimenting to integration, meaning that solutions need to be embedded into existing workflows, rather than a total infrastructure overhaul. This favors U.S. companies offering modular, interoperable tools over those requiring large upfront system replacement.
