South Africa Energy Eskom Launches 75 MW Lethabo Solar Project

South Africa’s state-owned utility Eskom has begun construction of a 75 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) facility adjacent to the Lethabo Power Station in Free State Province, creating potential opportunities for U.S. suppliers of renewable energy, battery storage, grid modernization, engineering, and power sector technologies. The project is part of Eskom’s broader plan to develop approximately 6 GW of renewable energy and energy storage capacity by 2030 through 17 projects located across its existing power station footprint.
Construction of the Lethabo solar project commenced on May 27, 2026. Once operational, the facility is expected to generate approximately 147 GWh of electricity annually. Eskom plans to leverage existing grid connections, transmission infrastructure, water access, and available land at several power station sites, including Arnot, Duvha, Majuba, Tutuka, Lethabo, Komati, Kendal, Kusile, Hendrina, Camden, and Grootvlei. This strategy is intended to accelerate deployment timelines while supporting South Africa’s energy transition and improving grid reliability.
