Poland Aviation: Rzeszów Airport Launches Multi-Million Safety Investment
Rzeszów–Jasionka Ulma Family Airport in southeastern Poland has initiated a multi‑million‑zloty investment program aimed primarily at improving safety and access control across its critical infrastructure, with current projects totaling roughly 25 million PLN, or about 6–7 million USD at prevailing exchange rates. The plan includes construction of a new entry to the airport’s restricted zone, a dedicated facility for the control of people, vehicles and cargo, and the installation of advanced security technologies such as X‑ray and radiometric screening systems, all together representing several million dollars in new security infrastructure. These upgrades are designed to separate passenger and cargo traffic more effectively, enhance protection of airside operations and increase resilience of the airport’s role as a dual‑use (civil and military) node on NATO’s eastern flank.
The project is co‑financed from European funds, with up to 18.7 million PLN (approximately 4.5–5 million USD) in EU support for the new restricted‑area entry and additional funding for modernization of the central security checkpoint and acquisition of new fire‑and‑rescue vehicles. As part of the security checkpoint upgrade, the airport will deploy next‑generation C3‑standard baggage scanners, automated tray‑handling systems and expanded CCTV coverage, which will both shorten screening times and raise detection performance to top European standards. In parallel, recent and ongoing projects in runway, taxiway and airfield systems—co‑funded under EU instruments such as CEF and FEnIKS—have lifted the airport’s cumulative investment to more than 80 million PLN over the past three years, equivalent to roughly 20 million USD, significantly strengthening its capacity to handle growing civil and strategic traffic 24/7 in all weather conditions.
