Malaysia Environmental Technology Meteorology

Malaysia is preparing upgrades to its national weather, climate, and seismic monitoring systems, creating opportunities for U.S. firms specializing in meteorological equipment, advanced sensing technologies, and early warning systems. With an upcoming procurement for new weather radars and seismic sensors, U.S. suppliers can leverage their technical strengths and partner with Malaysian firms to compete for government projects.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia), operating under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), delivers a wide range of meteorological, climatological, and geophysical services. It monitors and provides forecasts, advisories, weather and ocean alerts, and climate analyses to help mitigate disaster risks across the country’s land, sea, and air. MET Malaysia also offers specialized aviation meteorological services to support aircraft operations, as well as geophysical services for earthquake detection and tsunami warnings in Malaysia.

MET Malaysia currently manages a network of 80 seismic sensors across the country to monitor and detect earthquake activity both domestically and regionally. Additionally, MET Malaysia operates 83 tsunami sirens throughout the country, placed in areas most at risk.

MET Malaysia is looking to procure new weather radars and seismic sensors. The tender is expected to be released in the first quarter of 2026.

U.S. companies with meteorological technology can partner with a local Malaysian company to make proposals to MET Malaysia. The U.S. Commercial Service team in Malaysia offers export promotion programs such as International Partner Search and International Company Profile to help U.S. exporters identify potential local partners.
