Kuwait’s Battery Energy Storage Market

The Kuwait battery energy storage systems (BESS) market is experiencing robust growth, driven by Kuwait’s increasing emphasis on renewable energy integration, grid stability, and energy security.  On November 11, 2025, Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy (MEWRE) announced a landmark BESS project with planned discharge capacity of 1 to 1.5 gigawatts and total storage capacity between 4 to 6 gigawatt-hours (GWh).  The project is planned for implementation in two phases, commencing in 2027.

The project complements Kuwait’s broader infrastructure initiatives, including the Al-Khairan Power Plant and the Al-Shagaya Renewable Energy Complex, which together are expected to add nearly 2.9 gigawatts of capacity and is anticipated to be awarded in the second half of 2026.  This development is pivotal as Kuwait’s national electricity grid continues to face mounting pressure from rapid population growth, extensive urban expansion, insufficient power plant maintenance, and soaring summer temperatures.
