Kenya National Security Budget of Approximately $2.2 Billion

In its 2023/2024 national budget, Kenya allocated approximately $2.2 billion towards the operations of its national security agencies. These resources will be distributed to the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), National Police Service, and National Intelligence Service. The KDF will receive the largest allocation of the three, approximately $1 billion.

The government intends to bring back on track expansion and modernization efforts of the security services, which have slowed down in recent fiscal cycles due to constrained public expenditure posture. Opportunities for U.S. companies may include in the following areas: construction and equipping of Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) along the Kenya-Somalia border, acquisition of communication systems and cybersecurity solutions, and enhancement of personnel welfare for service members and employees, including housing particularly through public-private partnership frameworks.

Key allocations towards national security agencies include:
-    Approximately $688m for the National Police Service;
-    Approximately $304m for the National Intelligence Service;
-    Approximately $5.2m for equipping the National Forensic Laboratory;
-    Approximately $ 3.5m for police modernization programs; and
-    Approximately $695,000 for strengthening the national communication and surveillance system.
