Japan Advanced Building Materials

The Japanese advanced building materials market is expected to see medium- to long-term growth, driven by stricter environmental regulations, the spread of energy-efficient housing, and the promotion of Net Zero Energy Houses (ZEH). This presents a timely commercial opportunity for U.S. manufacturers with proven building technologies that improve insulation, energy performance, and structural resilience. Areas of opportunity include insulation materials (vacuum insulation panels, aerogel, etc.), exterior materials (cool roofs, high-performance siding), frame & structural materials (high seismic-resistance materials), interior materials (low-VOC & natural materials), and recycled & biomass building materials.

The Japanese green building materials market is forecast to grow at an average annual rate of over 11 percent from 2024 to 2029 and is projected to reach $4.79 billion by 2033. Market expansion is being supported by stronger energy-saving building regulations, environmental goals, and changes in consumer demand. Key factors in driving demand include:

  1. Promotion of energy-efficient policies: The Japanese government is promoting higher-performing building materials through the Building Energy Conservation Act and the Act on Promotion of Global Warming Countermeasures, which have led to a rapid increase in demand for materials with excellent insulation, weather resistance, and energy-saving performance.
  2. Expansion of ZEH: ZEH is moving toward becoming a standard for newly constructed homes. Companies like Sekisui House and MUJI Houses are helping advance the adoption of high-performance building systems and materials.
  3. Demand for disaster-resilient building systems:  Japan’s exposure to earthquakes, typhoons, tsunamis, and other natural disasters create sustained demand for high-durability, high-strength, and seismic-resistant building materials.
  4. Growing health consciousness & low-volatile organic compounds (VOCs) demand: Since the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for low-VOC materials, formaldehyde-free materials, and products that improve indoor environments have surged.

U.S. manufacturers of advanced building materials and companies with technologies for green buildings seeking to partner with Japanese trading companies/investors should consider services and programs of the U.S. Commercial Service.
