Israel Establishes Joint Biomedical Research Institute

Israel’s Sheba Medical Center and Bar-Ilan University announced the creation of a joint biomedical research institute with an initial investment of ILS 400 million (approx. USD 105 million). The institute, modeled after the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), will house 20 laboratories and focus on translational medicine, turning basic scientific discoveries into clinical treatments. Research areas include cancer, organ and tissue printing, medical robotics, genetic engineering, and artificial intelligence (AI) for medical data analysis.

The institute will be located in the emerging Health Tech Valley in Ramat Gan, adjacent to Sheba Medical Center. Hundreds of doctors and scientists are expected to participate, with the goal of creating an ecosystem where academia, hospitals, pharma, and biotech companies collaborate closely.

Opportunities for U.S. Companies:

  • Medical Devices & Digital Health: Demand for advanced imaging, diagnostics, and AI-driven solutions for clinical data analysis.
  • Biotech & Pharma R&D: Opportunities for joint research, licensing, and commercialization of therapies, especially in oncology and immunotherapy.
  • 3D Bioprinting & Robotics: U.S. companies in tissue engineering, surgical robotics, and regenerative medicine can partner with Israeli labs.
  • Research Infrastructure & Equipment: The institute’s new laboratories will require advanced lab equipment, consumables, and software, creating immediate procurement opportunities.
  • Collaborative Ecosystem: U.S. firms can tap into Israel’s health innovation hub by partnering with Sheba and Bar-Ilan, similar to existing models at NIH and the Broad Institute in Massachusetts.
