Indonesia Bicycle Market

Since the large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) were implemented in April 2020, the surge in bicycle sales almost quadrupled. Sixty percent of the market today prefers folding bikes, 30 percent for mountain bikes, and the remaining 10 percent prefer other products, such as city bikes and children’s bicycles.

The Chairman of the Indonesian Cycling Industry Association or AIPI said that imported products—rather than local products—still dominate bicycle purchases in the Indonesian market. As a result, Indonesia imports as many as 7 million bikes annually, while only producing approximately 2.5 million bicycles.

The future of the bicycle market in Indonesia appears promising, particularly concerning opportunities in the fields of road/standard bicycles, mountain (MTB) or racing bicycles, children’s bicycles, and e-bikes. With more Indonesians cycling, this trend indicates promising prospects for the bicycle industry, including the growing use of folding electric bikes with the already increased demand.

In this market, road/standard, MTB/racing, kids’ bikes, and e-bikes are the main segments of the bicycle industry. E-bikes are an especially popular type in many countries, particularly for those riders that seek a green mode of transportation. Electric bikes can be categorized into Battery/Pedal Assist and Throttle modalities. The appeal of environmental sustainability with increasing demand for e-bikes among the young population are promising for market growth opportunities in Indonesia.

The Central Statistics Agency of Indonesia (BPS) has also noted that the value of bicycle imports during April 2021 is $,11.39 million USD which jumped to 101.59% compared to $ 5.65 million USD in April 2020.  With the increasing bicycle imports, there are opportunities for foreign companies to distribute their bicycle products to Indonesia.
