Hungary’s wind energy tender opens market for U.S. firms
Overview
Hungary’s upcoming wind power tenders and grid upgrades create a near-term opening for U.S. companies across the renewable energy value chain. After a decade of limited utility-scale wind development, the government now targets 4,000 MW of wind-related grid capacity by 2030 and plans a tender for around 1,000 MW of new wind capacity by August 31, 2026, following a stakeholder consultation closing August 5.
Opportunities for U.S. Companies
Significant EU-backed funding – about EUR 1.5 billion for grid modernization and EUR 150 million for smart metering – will support integration of more than 4,800 MW of additional clean generation, driving demand for advanced turbines, grid equipment, energy storage, power electronics, and digital controls. U.S. firms with expertise in utility-scale wind, hybrid projects, grid flexibility solutions, and project development services are well positioned to compete, particularly if they engage early in the consultation process and partner with local stakeholders, Hungarian developers and utilities.
Regulatory and permitting constraints remain, including strict spatial-planning rules, environmental impact obligations, military and radar buffer zones, and a new tender-based grid-connection regime that is still being implemented. However, these requirements also create opportunities for U.S. companies offering technical advisory, environmental consulting, project structuring, and compliance solutions that can help Hungarian developers and utilities navigate complex permitting and grid-connection processes. Requirements for automatic frequency restoration reserve (aFRR) and integrated storage or non-weather-dependent capacity above 50 kW open additional opportunities for U.S. firms offering storage systems, control software, and grid‑support solutions.
To capture this opening, U.S. firms should monitor the evolving tender design, assess grid-connection locations identified by the system operator, and position tailored offerings that combine equipment, software, and services to support Hungary’s accelerated wind deployment. Early engagement with local partners and authorities can position U.S. suppliers to compete in the upcoming tenders and in follow-on grid and smart metering projects through 2030.
