Hungary - New Rail Link and Terminal at Budapest Airport

The Hungarian Government is planning an EUR 2.5 billion development project around the Budapest International Airport. The project includes an EUR1 billion for a 27km railway link to the city, an EUR1 billion for a third terminal, and an EUR 500 million for road construction. The railway development and its operation will be offered under a concession scheme.   The Hungarian government is considering participation in the concession company as a minority shareholder. Upon the concession’s expiry, the railway track will revert to state ownership.

The construction of the new terminal is scheduled to begin in March 2026 and is expected to take eight years. The government estimates that the airport’s capacity could rise to 40 million passengers annually, up from 20 million this year.

The 12km, six-lane access road network could be completed by the end of 2028, while both the third terminal and rail link are slated for completion in 2034 or 2035.

The Hungarian government also plans to establish an aviation holding company, Aviatikai Holding, which would include the Budapest, Debrecen and Sármellék airports, as well as Hungarocontrol, the national air traffic service provider.

U.S. companies in the aviation and airport sector have a strong worldwide reputation for great quality, innovation and after-sale service, and are well-positioned to compete in the aviation market in Hungary.
