Hungary Hydrogen Technology

Hydrogen production is already happening in Hungary, although it is still fossil-based. Hungary is seeking a comparative advantage by producing hydrogen in a green manner. One potential process for this greener production would be based on electrolysis (e.g. The excess electricity generated by the Paks Nuclear Power Plant could be used to produce green hydrogen).

Through the preparation of the current Hydrogen Strategy, we now see that Hungary has good potential for natural gas transport and storage (a significant storage capacity of more than 6 billion cubic meters is already in place). Hungary also has a well-developed natural gas network, and it would be important to see how this network could be utilized for hydrogen transport and storage in the future. Several pilot programs have already been launched for these projects in cooperation with industry players to see how future demonstration projects could be executed.

Hungary also has the goal of building two hydrogen sites, where different elements of the hydrogen supply chain and ecosystem can be conducted simultaneously. The Paks/Dunaújváros area would be one such site, the other being Miskolc and its surroundings. Both areas already have significant industrial production and a surplus of electricity available nearby.
The utilization of pre-existing industrial development is important as a horizontal point. The same applies to the issue of education, i.e. how to launch educational programs that focus specifically on hydrogen. In addition, there is the development of SMEs, to ensure a multitude of industrial players will be involved in this value chain.

Hungary considers Hydrogen an essential part of the 2050 climate target.
