Guyana Telemedicine Opportunities

U.S. companies with affordable solutions in telemedicine should consider the Guyanese market to help provide healthcare to indigenous and rural communities.

In 2022, the Government of Guyana (GOG) sought to implement the remote diagnosis and treatment of patients by means of telecommunications technology, starting with a trial phase in four remote communities in Region Nine of Guyana (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).

The “Telemedicine Project to Transform Healthcare in Guyana” was welcomed by the indigenous and rural communities given the challenges to accessing healthcare stemming from long distances between population clusters, limited infrastructure, and past lack of resources and investment.  In an attempt to address the lack of healthcare options for citizens in the interior, the Government of Guyana (GOG) allocated, in its approach to remedying this issue, has allocated 8.6 million to implement a larger telemedicine program on a national scale.

This program allows medical personnel in the hinterland to receive real-time assistance from healthcare specialists stationed in the capital city, Georgetown, bridging the gap between the hinterland and coastland.

To date, there are approximately 14 tele-health sites in indigenous communities, with the desire for more as the country improves its technological and interconnective capabilities. While there has been significant work done in the delivery of this initiative, there is a need for support in the legislative and policy space to ensure accountability, managing client information, program efficacy, and sustainability.
